Are the Green Party scared of the BNP?

The possibility of the Green Party not standing in Barking was discussed at the London Green Party’s AGM in September and there was a fair amount of support for this in view of the BNP threat. Now with the announcement of Griffin standing, Green Left will do everything possible to persuade the London party not to stand any candidates there and to support the main ‘progressive’ candidate against him. I share the views of many here about Hodge. She is vile and has pandered totally, as have many others in New Labour, to the BNP’s anti-immigrant agenda. I watched a Newsnight programme with her last year where her solution to voter disengagement was that her electors could always “come and have a chat with tea and biscuits with me”. The working class panel opposite her, which included Bob Crow just laughed in ridicule at her Lady of the Manor airs. She also presided over terrible things in Islington re childrens’ homes and I am sure that the BNP will use that against her.

Green Left are increasingly looking like a bunch of defeatists. It is not up to the Green Party to rescue the Labour Party from its unpopularity. If it was the party would pull out of many of its target seats.

In Croydon Central last time round the defeated Labour candidate, and pro-war Blareite, blamed the Green Party for his defeat by 75 votes. He was wrong, his defeat was his own fault, nothing to do with the 1,000+ votes polled by the Greens. Most of the people who voted Green would probably have not voted at all.

It is time the party just ignored the BNP and got on with the job of getting itself elected, not propping up useless Labour MPs.

Faith Schools

ED170 Education should include a celebration and recognition of religious and cultural diversity and spirituality.

ED171 The Green Party recognises the right of parents to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children in ccordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

ED172 We recognise the importance of human values and the moral dimension in learning, often expressed through spiritual and political values.

Policy

ED173 We will seek to cater for these rights and needs through ensuring that children and young people can practise their fait in schools, for example by providing prayer space for those who need or wish to practise their religion regularly.

ED174 At the same time we will abolish the requirement for a compulsory daily act of worship.

ED175 Religious instruction, as distinct from religious education in understanding different religions may only take place outside of school curriculum tim.

ED176 All schools, both state-controlled and privately run will be required to embrace a multi-faith perspective by giving equal respect to all faiths, as well as respecting the rights of children to adopt a secular world view should they wish to.

ED177 Where faith schools already exist they will reflect the inclusive nature of British society and become part of the Local uthority admissions system. This non-discriminatory approach will be extended to staff who must not be discriminated against in faith schools due to their own faith either in seeking employment or during employment.

Mr Blair, in the famous words of his spokesman, Alastair Campbell, did not "do God" while he was in Downing Street. He later admitted that he feared he would be labelled a "nutter" if he spoke publicly about his religious convictions.

Proof if ever it was needed that he lied about his "faith" in order to gain power.

It's reminds me of the end of animal farm where the pigs start chanting "four legs good two legs better". We now have the unpleasant spectacle of a Labour Government, yes a LABOUR Government, using the excuse of "terrorism" to restrict the legitimate journalistic and political life of this country. And I used to think Thatcher's government was repressive...

This isn't just my personal view, it is the view of Dame Stella Rimington, the former head of MI5 who "has accused the Government of exploiting people’s fear of terrorism to restrict civil rights." The final proof has come this week with Section 76 of the Counter Terrorism Act which effectively makes it illegal to photograph a police officer.

Photography has been a very useful tool of political protests, particularly where the police forces have sought to prevent that protest taking place. Now any press photographer taking photograph of excessive police force will simply be arrested under Section 76 of the Counter Terrorism Act and the evidence of police wrongdoing will be conveniently be deleted.

I have previously been a victim of the met police's harassment tactics against photographers in London, as has my MP.

Susan Blackmore, in today's Comment is Free, gives a rounded examination of her objections to imposed prayer, and the problem of the proselytizing nurse. She even points out the clear scientific evidence for the harmful effects of prayer:-

In the Harvard prayer experiment, 1802 cardiac bypass patients were divided into three groups. Two were told that they might be prayed for; half were and half weren't. The third group were told they would be prayed for and they were. The first two groups recovered equally well, but the group that knew they were being prayed for actually did worse.

It seems this woman is in fact an evangelical christian supported by the extremist Christian Legal Centre which has been behind all the other recent law cases, most of which they have lost:-

"If they said 'please don't ask patients to pray' then I am sorry, I can't promise that, so where do we go from there? I would have to contact my lawyer."

Mrs Petrie is represented by the Christian Legal Centre, which described the hospital's climbdown as a "victory for common sense"....

She said that in 24 years of nursing that she had only been asked to pray by a patient on three occasions, but had offered to pray for people on hundreds of occasions without complaint.

She said she had only received two objections, once when she produced home-made prayer cards and this most recent incident.

How many of her patients have suffered religious abuse in silence? My grandmother would have been horrified at such behavior, but would probably have given a very robust Darwinist response!

Quacks in the Green Party

Unfortunately the Green Party often has a reputation for woolly minded thinking. Whilst this is untrue for the most part, and the party quite possibly has the highest level of education amongst its members of any mainstream parties, there are still elements which give the party a bad name.

One of the main problems the party suffers from is by association with quacks. The "alternative medicine" brigade, so roundly condemned by the wonderful Dr Ben Goldacre. These quacks give the party a bad name, and devalue the party's image. He did a wonderful analysis of the writings of Julia Stephenson, "green party candidate and beef heiress living in Chelsea on a trust fund, who believes her symptoms of tiredness and headache are caused by electromagnetic radiation from phones and Wi-Fi.

So I am saddened when I see another local Green Parties falling into the trap of associating with quackery. This time it is Lancaster & District Green Party which is openly promoting the "Lancaster Complementary Health Fair 09" which is promoting such crap as Acupuncture, Alexander Technique, Angel Painting, Aromatherapy, Aura Photography, Belly Dancing, Bowen Technique, Counselling, Colonic Hydrotherapy, Crystal Reflexology, Emotional Freedom Technique, Flower Essences, Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, Indian Head Massage, Iridology, Kudalini Yoga, Metamorphic Technique, Past Life Regression, Reiki, Shiatsu, Sound Essences, Sound Healing, Tai Chi, Traditional Chinese Medicine,and much more…….

It is a shame their blog does not allow comments.

Like David Attenborough I was fortunate enough to be brought up without religious influence at home. Attenborough said in a recent interview,

It never really occurred to me to believe in God – and I had nothing to rebel against, my parents told me nothing whatsoever. But I do remember looking at my headmaster delivering a sermon, a classicist, extremely clever … and thinking, he can’t really believe all that, can he? How incredible!

I am told that I turned round to the headmaster of my primary school (Turville C of E school, now a nursery) and told him that I did not believe in god because he couldn't possibly have created the world in 7 days.

Many years later the place became the setting of "The Vicar of Dibley" and "Midsomer Murders"!

Labour Group Leader defects to Greens

A Labour councillor in Bury St Edmunds, who twice stood for parliament, has quit the party over the expansion of Heathrow. Cllr Mark Ereira-Guyer, who stood as Labour candidate in the general elections in 1997 and 2001, has announced today that he is joining the Green Party.

The Met Police have been wasting their time of late stopping and searching middle aged photographers like me, near East Croydon Station. This is an abuse of police powers and a waste of time. However, my local MP seems to think otherwise when he was stopped for legitimate photography in the area.
